Frazer Nash at top hairpin

The city of Angoulême will host the 29th edition of the Circuit des Remparts in 2007, to the echo of historic racing cars within its high medieval walls. The town is completely taken over with the event and the atmosphere is akin to a more friendly and accessible Monaco during the Grand Prix.  Spectators and competitors can mix freely in the bars, hotels and restaurants. Crowds watch the rally come into town on Saturday and the Concours d’Elegance and Concours d’Etat in the town centre. These events and the races on Sunday are all minutes apart on foot from our central hotels. Watch Grand Prix Bugattis nosing their way down cobbled alleys en route to the Paddock. Grandstands are erected around the tight street circuit with nearby cafes, bars and food stalls keeping the spectators going on race day.  In the evenings the restaurants in the narrow streets of the old town are buzzing as everyone talks over the day’s events and looks forward to the next.

This will be our fifteenth consecutive tour to Les Remparts so you can expect our arrangements to be well-planned and our hotels are the best.  We have a selection of tours for those driving modern or classic cars and a new tour designed exclusively for vintage cars, to make a choice of holidays based around this event. The weather in September in the Charente tends to be delightful and it’s a good time to appreciate this lovely area at an atmospheric time of motoring festivity.  Join us in 2007.

Thursday 13 September

Today we suggest an enjoyable driving route, firstly from St Malo to the stunning personal collection at the Manoir de L’Automobile in Brittany for a visit and coffee stop. We then drive south to the Loire Valley for our overnight stop at the Abbey of Fontevraud, where our historic hotel is within the precincts of the 900 year old abbey which houses the recumbent effigies of King Henry II, Eleanor of Aquitaine and their son, Richard the Lionheart. We are promised a spectacular evening there.

This morning, we cross Anjou and travel through the Poitou region to the Atlantic seaboard at La Rochelle where we propose an optional lunch on the quayside. From here we take scenic roads along the valley of the Charente to arrive in Angoulême by the end of the afternoon and check into our central hotels with secure car parking. Packs and plaques for the Rally will be available on arrival. In the evening there is a Concours d'Elegance in town. Although this is intended as a free evening to explore independently the many delights of the old town centre, if you prefer it, we can also arrange a venue for dinner together.

Saturday 15 September

Leave for the assembly point for today’s rally. You will be part of the official touring Rally departing from Angouleme at 0900h on a carefully planned route, often lined with waving spectators, with an excellent lunch included. The rally concludes in Angoulême by 1700h. The Concours d'Etat takes place at 1700h in gardens of the town hall. Entry to this is possible for a supplementary cost and the prize is the winner’s height in cases of fine Cognac! In the evening we will enjoy the competitor’s gala buffet in the covered market, where the results of the concours will also be announced.

Sunday 16 September

You will have race tickets that give you access to the grandstands and the paddock. Practice starts from 0830h and racing commences after the lunch break and continues until 1800h. This evening we will have a dinner at one of the top restaurants in the old town of Angoulême.

Circuit des Remparts VintageTour

This tour is especially designed for pre 1955 cars.

A special tour for those with older vehicles providing a gentler lead-in to race weekend and at a relaxed pace.  It will offer a chance to see some more of the Charente and the Atlantic coast and enjoy hospitality from top Cognac producers of the region.

Wednesday 12 September

Follow our route down to the fascinating Manoir de l’Automobile, a collection of over 300 varied vehicles in a special setting belonging to a successful French publisher. There is a chance to look around the collection and have a coffee stop before continuing along the route to the Abbey of Fontevraud in the Loire Valley where we stay overnight and have dinner. The hotel is within the precincts of the 900 year old Abbey, which houses the recumbent effigies of King Henry II, Eleanor of Aquitaine and their son, Richard the Lionheart. We are promised a spectacular evening there.

Thursday 13 September

Leaving after breakfast we will follow a picturesque route as we head into the Charente and arriving into Cognac in the afternoon. Accommodation for three nights is reserved at a hotel on the edge of Cognac.  After checking in there’s a chance to cool off in the outdoor pool. This evening drinks and dinner will be arranged at the hotel.

Friday 14 September

After breakfast we leave the hotel in convoy for a rally through the Grande Champagne region of Cognac. Some of the prettiest routes have been selected passing through stunning vineyard countryside. The group will make their way to a distillery for a leisurely lunch. In the afternoon, the rally continues at an easy pace to the finish back in Cognac. This evening is free to go into the centre of town or simply to relax at the hotel.

In the afternoon we continue to the historic naval base of Rochefort to visit the original rope making works and to view the construction of a faithful replica of de Lafayette’s ship L’Hermione, due to sail across the Atlantic later this year. The rally ends back at the hotel in Cognac where we will enjoy a special dinner.

This evening we will have dinner at an excellent restaurant in the old town just a short walk away.

Monday 17 September

After breakfast check out of hotel and drive north in the direction of Le Mans. We have planned an overnight stay at the Hotel de France at La Chartre sur le Loir. The Aston Martin race team, amongst nmany others, used this famous and very traditional old hotel when competing at Le Mans with the DBR1. The hotel is steeped in motorsport history as the walls in the bar bear witness. Still in the same family ownership, the hotel has a very good restaurant where we will have our farewell dinner.
